PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent a decrease in accuracy in detecting displacement of a transfer belt even when a sensor for detecting the displacement of the transfer belt deteriorates with time. SOLUTION: A tandem type color image forming apparatus is provided with a displacement member 31 located in contact with the edge of the intermediate transfer belt 5 and displaced following the displacement of the intermediate transfer belt 5 in the width direction, thereby detecting the displacement of the displacement member 31 by means of a contactless type position sensor 32. In addition, in order to switch the arrangement of the intermediate transfer belt 5, each image forming unit, and each primary transfer roller between a first arrangement for color image formation and a second arrangement for monochrome image formation, an arrangement switching cam 26 is rotated. Using power for rotating the arrangement switching cam 26, the displacement member 31 is displaced separately from the intermediate transfer belt 5, thereby calibrating the position sensor 32.
