PURPOSE: An electrophoretic display device is provided to ensure the gap between a substrate and a protection film by preparing predetermined level difference in a protection film protruding toward side rather than the electrophoretic film. CONSTITUTION: An electrophoretic film(114) includes electric charging particles, and the electric charging particles are driven by an electrophoretic method. A color filter pattern(127) is placed on the elecctrophoretic film. A protection film(120) protects the electrophoretic film, and a sealant(116) is exposed to an external plane of a substrate(110). The protection film includes a stepped portion(129) protruding toward the side plane rather than the electrophoretic film.
