The appts. for manufacturing a metal pipe clad optical fibre cable comprises an assembly (2) having a number of pairs of rollers for shaping a pulled metal strip (1) and shaping it into a metal pipe by butting both sides of the metal strip (1) against each other. A laser welding device (7) effects laser welding of the butted portion to produce a sealed metal pipe (1c) and another device introduces an optical fibre (5) into the metal pipe (1a) shaped in this manner. The laser welder (7) determines a defocusing distance so that the back bead width determined by the outer dia. and thickness of the metal pipe falls within a predetermined range and effects laser welding at a welding rate corresp. to the defocusing distance thus determined. @(65pp Dwg.No.1/22)@.
