The present invention relates to a media recognition apparatus and method. The invention comprises: one UV light source (12) for consecutively irradiating the light on the one side of a medium (m) which is transferring. When the UV rays are irradiated from the UV light source (12), CIS sensors (14, 24) positioned in the upper and lower parts of the medium (m) consecutively extract the reflected images and the transmitted images from one side and the other side of the medium (m). Since the CIS sensors (14, 24) consecutively extract the reflected images and the transmitted images from the medium (m) which is transferring, image generators (18, 28) equivalent to the CIS sensors (14, 24) generate one completed reflected image and one completed transmitted image for the reflected and transmitted images which are extracted from the CIS sensors (14, 24). A controller (40) determines whether the medium is authentic, by comparing the reflected and transmitted images which are generated by the image generators (18, 28) with each reference image which is a comparison target. Thus, according to the present invention, the authenticity of the medium is determined by using one light source only, thereby further simplifying the structure of the media recognition apparatus and cutting down the production cost of the media recognition apparatus. |
