Mitochondrial mutations and rearrangements as a diagnostic tool for the detection of sun exposure, prostate cancer and other cancers

Provided is a method of detecting a deletion spanning approximately nucleotides 10744 to 14124 of the human mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) genome, wherein said deletion is associated with prostate cancer, in a subject having mtDNA, comprising: (a) providing a biological sample from the subject; and (b) detecting the presence of the deletion in the mtDNA. The deletion can be used as a biomarker for detection of prostate cancer.
