PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for efficiently producing a polyester resin for a coating material having good adhesion in recoat by stably imparting a carboxy group to a polyester resin having the terminals consisting essentially of hydroxy groups. SOLUTION: This method for producing the polyester resin for the coating material is characterized in that when producing the polyester resin comprising an acid component consisting essentially of an aromatic dicarboxylic acid component and an alcohol component consisting essentially of an aliphatic glycol, having 0.15-0.40 intrinsic viscosity and 3-10 mg/KOH/g acid value, and further having the terminals consisting essentially of the hydroxy groups, the polycondensation reaction is carried out after carrying out an esterification reaction of 1.0 mol acid component with 1.05-1.30 mol alcohol component.
