The present invention relates to the field of virology. More precisely, the invention provides a method of determining the ability of a test compound to modulate the biological activity of a variant of a target protein, wherein said test compound is previously known to modulate the biological activity of said protein. This invention is useful to determine whether a drug candidate, such as anti-viral compounds (e.g. against hepatitis C virus: NS5B, NS3), active against a target protein is active against a variant of said protein (e.g. polymorphisms, genotypes or mutants).
