An alternating-current rectifier assembly comprises a body of semi-conductive material to which is affixed a cooling plate and is characterized in that the cooling plate forms a detachable closure member for an aperture in the wall of a tube through which coolant may be passed. The tube may be common to a plurality of rectifiers. A PN junction rectifier 10, 11 is soldered to a large-area electrode/cooling plate 9 (e.g. of nickel-iron) and enclosed by casing 2. The plate 9 is screwed into an aperture in the wall of a tube 8 through which is passed a liquid coolant. One lead-connection is at 1 through casing 2 and the other may be to flange 4 on plate 9 or to the tube 8. A number of PN assemblies may be distributed along tube 8 so that tube 8 is a common electrode. The semiconductor disc 10 may consist of germanium or silicon. In further modifications : (i) the plate 9 may be insulated from the tube 8, (ii) each section of tube 8 corresponding to a PN assembly may be insulated from adjacent sections by short lengths of rubber tube (iii) the tube 8 is of electrically insulating material, (iv) an electrically non-conductive coolant is used, (v) the under surface of plate 9 over which the coolant flows may be coated with aluminium oxide or other insulating material.</p>
