The device (1) has a transport element (3) for conveying plate-like articles (2) in a conveying direction (F), and a stacking space (4) in which the plate-like articles are stacked. A stop (5) limits conveying movement of the plate-like articles in the conveying direction. The stop is movably arranged between a receiving position (6) for the plate-like articles and an end position (7) in the conveying direction, for braking the plate-like articles. A stop wall (10) limits the stacking space against the conveying direction. A control- or regulation unit (11) is connected with an actuator (9). An independent claim is also included for a method for operating a stacking device.
