Techniques for the treatment of skin segments by application of optical radiation are limited due to dark skin pigmentation. The application of a whitening substance is utilized to temporarily lighten a targeted skin segment. In the temporarily lightened state, optical radiation for skin treatment is applied in a more effective manner.
