PURPOSE: An apparatus for detecting temperature of power cables and methods of controlling the same are provided to reduce power consumption by easily monitors the operation state of a temperature detection unit. CONSTITUTION: A zero-phase current transformer(33) is installed in a power cable in order to change the current flowing in the power cable. A capacitor(19) is electrically connected to the zero-phase current transformer. A comparator(21) is electrically connected to the capacitor in order to prevent the overcharging of the capacitor. A regulator(23) generates power voltage according to the charge voltage of the capacitor. A central processing unit(15) is converted into a sleep mode and an operation mode according to the level of the power voltage supplied to the regulator.
