PURPOSE: A negative active material for a rechargeable lithium battery, a preparation method thereof and a rechargeable lithium battery are provided to ensure excellent capability and cycle lifetime. CONSTITUTION: A negative active material for a rechargeable lithium battery comprises a nanotube with a pipe shape defined by exterior walls with thickness of nanoscale. The exterior wall has at least one kind of non-carbon material selected from the group consisting of silicon, germanium and antimony. The exterior wall has the thickness of 10~30nm. The average diameter of the cross section is 180~300nm.
