PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a cylinder direct injection type engine capable of inhibiting the emission of both NOx and unburnt CO even if stratified charge, compression and self-ignition combustion is performed. SOLUTION: The engine includes a fuel injection valve 31 directly injecting fuel into a combustion chamber 21, uses the fuel injected from the fuel injection valve 31 to form a stratified mixture, and allows the ignition of partial fuel in the stratified mixture within a predetermined equivalent ratio after a partial fuel concentration in the stratified mixture is diluted to a first equivalent ratio which is a limit value for not generating a large quantity of NOx and before the partial fuel concentration in the stratified mixture is diluted to a second equivalent ratio which is a limit value for not generating a large quantity of CO.
