PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a novel catalyst system appropriate for copolymerization of ethylene and a higher 1-olefin, and a method for copolymerizing ethylene and a higher 1-olefin using the same. SOLUTION: The polymerization catalyst comprises: a compound (1) of formula B wherein M is Fe[II], or Fe[III], X represents an atom or group covalently or ionically bonded to the transition metal M, T is the oxidation state of the transition metal M and b is the valency of the atom or group X, and R<SP>1</SP>-R<SP>7</SP>are independently selected from hydrogen, halogen, and hydrocarbyl; and a further catalyst (2).
