PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To reduce the load on the environment by efficiently and easily separating and recovering an expensive ruthenium catalyst used when producing adamantanols to reduce a ruthenium compound flowing out into waste water. SOLUTION: The method for producing the adamantanols by reacting the adamantanes in a two-phase system of water and an organic solvent by the ruthenium compound and a hypochlorite includes (1) adding an alkali to a mixed liquid after the reaction, (2) separating the mixed liquid into an aqueous phase and an organic phase, (3) reducing the concentration of an≤8C alcohol in the aqueous phase to≤0.1 wt.% by cleaning, and (4) adding the hypochlorite and the organic solvent to the aqueous phase after the cleaning, to recover the ruthenium.
