[Class 78 (iii)] An auxiliary unloaded rope or ropes extends between a lift cage and its counterweight or between one cage and its counterbalancing cage, and is arranged to take up the load of the cage and weight and support them in the event of breakage or undue stretching of the main winding rope, while at the same time the release in the tension of the winding rope due to either cause actuates electric control mechanism to stop the driving-gear. Fig. 1 shows one central auxiliary rope 5 passing from the cage to the counterweight 4 between the pair of winding-ropes 2. Each. rope passes over a, separate driving-pulley 3, the centre one of which is more deeply-grooved than the others to secure an extra bite for the rope 5 when in action. Fig. 3 shows one method of connecting the ends of the ropes to the cage or the weight. The weight of the cage compresses the springs 9 between the ends of the screwed adjustment members 11 and the couplings 7 on the ropes. The central member 12 is adjusted by unscrewing it, so that the rope 5 is just kept taut without bearing any of the load of the cage. When the ropes 2 break or become unduly stretched the load is wholly or partly transferred to the rope 5 thus relieving the ropes 2 and allowing the springs 9 to expand. This releases spring members 13 from the ends of caps 11 and they are pressed upwards to make contacts inside the boxes 14 and stop the motor. The ropes 5 may be passed over separate compartments of the main winding drum where drums are used, or may be passed over separate loose or fast pulleys on the winding drum shaft. Fig. 5 shows a modification in which two auxiliary ropes are wound oppositely on the centre compartment 16a, of the winding-drum, one, 5a, passing to the cage and the other, 5b, passing to the other cage or the counterweight. |
