PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing triethanolamine having more improved color quality compared with the well-known technical level. SOLUTION: The method for producing triethanolamine includes adding phosphorous and/or hypophosphorous acid and a basic compound before and/or in distillation of triethanolamine, wherein the basic compound is a [R<SP>1</SP>R<SP>2</SP>R<SP>3</SP>(2-hydroxyethyl)ammonium]hydroxide, provided that R<SP>1</SP>, R<SP>2</SP>and R<SP>3</SP>independently represents C<SB>1</SB>-<SB>30</SB>alkyl or C<SB>2</SB>-<SB>10</SB>hydroxyalkyl. The additional addition of ammonium hydroxide to phosphorous acid brings increase of yield by distillation of triethanolamine without disadvantageous influence over color number but with partially-advantageous influence on the color number (in a sense of reduction of the color numbers).
