PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To switch a damping force by a damping force generation means from a low-damping side to a high-damping side when an input vibration is equal to or larger than a prescribed level. SOLUTION: A hydraulic shock absorber 20 contains a damping force switching mechanism 40. The damping force switching mechanism 40 consists of a shut-off valve 39, an actuator 42, a damping force switching valve 50 for switching the liquid passage 29B from a low-damping side to a high-damping side by releasing or shutting off the liquid passage 29B communicating with the shut-off valve 39 and a valve switching mechanism 60 for switching the damping force switching valve 50 from an opening state to a closing state. The valve switching mechanism 60 consists of a connection and disconnection mechanism 62 which brings a damping force of damping valves 32A, 32B into a low side under a connected state and a damping force of damping valves 32A, 32B into a high side under a separated state, and a releasing mechanism 63 which maintains the connected state of the connection and disconnection mechanism 62 when a moving amount of a piston rod 23 is small and brings the connection and disconnection mechanism 62 into the separated state when an axial movement amount of the piston rod 23 becomes a default or more.
