The disclosed positive electrode active material includes a plurality of crystalline particles comprising lithium manganate with a spinel structure including lithium and manganese as constituent elements, and which include primary particles, which are those that have a particle diameter of 5 - 20 µm, and a bismuth compound, which includes bismuth. The primary particles included in the plurality of crystalline particles constitute at least 70% of the plurality of crystalline particles by area, and the bismuth which is included in the bismuth compound is included at a ratio of 0.005 - 0.5 mol% with respect to the manganese included in the lithium manganate. The surface to weight ratio of the positive electrode active material is 0.1 - 0.5 m2/g.
