PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide colloidal silica which has high-purity and is inexpensive, and to provide a method for producing such colloidal silica. SOLUTION: The method for producing colloidal silica comprises: a surface treatment process of performing the wet treatment of crude colloidal silica containing alkali metal with a surface treatment agent; and a refining process of preparing refined colloidal silica by performing the washing with mineral acid-containing liquid and water in this order. In particular, the surface treatment agent desirably contains at least one compound selected from a group consisting of silane coupling agents and silazanes. COPYRIGHT: (C)2011,JPO&INPIT
