Method for the preparation of sevoflurane from sevochlorane using a phase transfer catalyst

Disclosed is a process for preparing the compound (CF3)2CHOCH2F, (also known as sevoflurane), the method involving forming a reaction mixture of the precursor (CF3)2CHOCH2Cl, (also known as sevochlorane), potassium fluoride, water, and a phase transfer catalyst selected from quaternary ammonium salts, quaternary phosphonium salts, crown ethers, ionic liquids, and chiral compounds, with the proviso that an organic co-solvent is not present. Further suitable conditions such as temperature, pressure, and particular catalysts are disclosed.
