PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To effectively improve the beautiful appearance of a coating film and to appropriately cure first and second coating materials composed of water soluble coating materials, by a simple configuration. SOLUTION: In the method of coating an automobile body and the apparatus therefor, the method includes: a first coating film forming process K1 of forming a first coating film 6 having a base hiding property by applying a water soluble first paint onto the outer panel surface of the automobile body 1; a second coating film forming process K2 of forming a second coating film 7 which has the base hiding property lower than that of the first coating film 5 and develops an appearance coating film color by coating a water soluble second coating material on it; a preliminary drying process K3 of preliminarily drying the first and second coating films 5 and 6 after forming the second coating film 6 and vaporizing moisture; a third coating film forming process K4 of applying a solvent type third coating material on an inner panel surface 3 after the preliminary drying and forming a third coating film 7 which develops the appearance coating film color same as or similar to the appearance coating film color on the side of an outer panel 2; and baking and drying process K7 of simultaneously baking and drying the first-third coating films 5-7 after forming the third coating film 7.
