<p>A process for the manufacture of a horticultural growing medium, the process comprising the steps of:(i) effecting the anaerobic digestion of plant material to generate methane and thermal energy;(ii) adding to the digested plant material a composition comprising phytophilic ionic species and heating the resultant mixture; and (iii) filtering material obtained in step (ii) to separate finer and coarser particles and then applying the finer particle size fraction to the surface of the particles of the coarser fraction.The heat applied in step ii) may be generated by burning the methane formed in step i). The phytophilic ions added may be Epsom salts (magnesium sulphate). A phytophilic adhesive such as gelatins or urea formaldehyde resins may be added in step iii) to adhere the finer particles to the surface of the coarser particles.</p> |
