A recuperative heater 100 for heating the heater heads 3 of an external combustion machine 2 includes at recuperative heat exchanger having an axial pass section 11, 12 partially surrounding the combustion chamber 1. Combustion products pass from the recuperative heat exchanger to a condensing exhaust gas heat exchanger surrounding the axial pass section 11, 12 and comprising a cylindrical exhaust gas passage 15 ringed externally by a water jacket 16. Water from the water jacket 16 may be circulated to a thermal load. A top cover 17 of the heater opposes the heater heads 3 or hot end of the engine. Inner and outer plenums 6, 18 are formed between the combustion chamber wall 5 and the top cover 17 and inlet air is heated in stages as it enters the outer plenum 18, passes into the axial pass section, into the inner plenum 6, then into the combustion chamber 1.
