[Class 80(iv)] [Also in Groups XXXI and XXXVII] The rim of the steering wheel of an electric trolley bus carries one or more switches such that if the driver relaxes his grip of the wheel motoring, if in progress, is terminated and braking-electrical, mechanical, or both-is applied. The insulating rim is split into a lower part 14 and an upper part 13 supported on the lower at each of four points around the rim by a bolt 16 and by a spring 19 which biasses the part 13 upwardly to an extent limited by nuts 18 on the bolt 16. Each bolt carries, within part 14, a spring-loaded contact disc 20 which can bridge the fixed contacts of a switch 1 mounted on a removable insulating cover plate 24 and connected to concentric sliprings 29 around the hub 11 of the wheel. Fixed brushes bearing on these rings connect the switches in circuit. At least one switch can be closed by gripping the rim at any point. |
