PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for obtaining a carbon fiber precursor fiber, having a high quality and high definition, being excellent in passing stability in the production process of the carbon fiber, and reducing its production energy, while improving productivity and processability, for wet spinning of a PAN-based carbon fiber precursor fiber. SOLUTION: In the method for producing the carbon fiber precursor fiber, when dry/wet spinning a spinning solution obtained by dissolving polyacrylonitrile-based polymer having a weight average molecular weight Mw of 100,000-700,000, and a polydispersity Mz/Mw representing Z-average molecular weight Mz to weight average molecular weight Mw of 2.7-6 in a solvent at a concentration of not less than 5 wt.% and less than 30 wt.%, the spinning solution is ejected into a coagulation bath having a coagulation value of 17-40 g under coagulation conditions.
