In a fixed bed reactor for biological purification of fluids comprising a reactor vessel (10) containing a fixed bed of loose bodies (20), a number of the loose bodies can be introduced into the reactor vessel during operation of the reactor. An independent claim is included for a corresponding method for charging a fixed bed reactor, involving introducing a number of the loose bodies into the reactor vessel during operation of the reactor.
