PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image forming apparatus for suppressing surface wearing of an intermediate transfer body, and also, suppressing image quality irregularities arising between a passing area and a non-passing area of a transfer medium on the surface of the intermediate transfer body. SOLUTION: After transferring a toner image to the transfer medium 115, the non-passing area of the transfer medium 115 on the surface of the intermediate transfer belt 107 is cleaned by a second intermediate transfer belt cleaning device 113. and the cleaning is performed by applying an AC field or a solvent to the non-contact area on the surface of the intermediate transfer belt 107.
