<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an improved marine radar system which lowers transmission power and offers a consistent performance with a low maintenance requirement while maintaining or improving detection sensitivity, range resolution, and display accuracy. <P>SOLUTION: The marine radar system and method produce low power, high-resolution range profile estimates. Nonlinear frequency modulation (NLFM) pulse compression pulses are frequency stepped to form a low power, wide-bandwidth waveform.
