PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an ion generating apparatus which can highly accurately determine the presence or absence of the ions, without effect of temperature, humidity, and aging of ion generators; and to provide a method for determining presence or absence of ions. SOLUTION: A measurement part 67 measures potential of a collecting electrode 66 which collects positive ions and negative ions each generated by both ion generating parts 61 of the ion generators 6a and 6b, and ion generating parts 62 of the ion generators 6c and 6d. When determining the presence or absence of the ions, the ion generators 6a and 6b, and ion generators 6c and 6d are made to turn on/off alternately. In ion determination 1, they are made to turn on/off six times on a ten-second cycle, and in ion determination 2, they are made to turn on/off ten times on a one-second cycle. When a difference (variation) between the maximum value and minimum value of output voltage in the measurement part 67 is greater than a predetermined threshold, ions are determined to exist in the respective generators.
