PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve reading quality by reducing shift in timing during an intermittent sheet-through reading operation wherein a drive control signal in a main scanning direction and a drive control signal in a sub scanning direction are asynchronous with each other. SOLUTION: An image reading apparatus is configured to read a document on the basis of a read period signal output at fixed intervals and convey the document by a motor which is driven by a motor driving pulse asynchronous with the read period signal. The image reading apparatus includes: an ideal read position calculating means which uses amount of change in the pulse interval of the motor driving pulse during deceleration or acceleration of motor driving to calculate an ideal read position where a motor feeding amount per read cycle of the read period signal at constant-velocity motor driving becomes a fixed ratio; and a selection means for selecting a read period signal closest to the ideal read position.
