<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for adjusting a sensor for paper sheets capable of enhancing the reliability in detecting paper sheets by preventing any improper detection of the sensors for paper sheets according to the thickness of the paper sheets in advance. Ž<P>SOLUTION: The operating current I is increased while a thermal paper sheet 4 is present between a light emitting element and a light receiving element, and the emitted light reaches the light receiving element, and the output voltage V reaches the light receiving level, the operating current I is stored as I1. Further, the output voltage V immediately before the output voltage V reaches the light receiving level is stored as V1. Then, the operating current I is reduced from I1 while any thermal paper sheet is not present between the light emitting element and the light receiving element, and the operating current I is stored as I2 when the emitted light does not reach the light receiving element, and the output voltage V is on the non-light-receiving level. Further, the output voltage V immediately before the output voltage V reaches the non-light-receiving level is stored as V2. The operating current I during the normal operation of the light emitting element is set in a range of I1 and I2, and the reference voltage Vs for determining the paper sheet to the output voltage V of the light receiving element is set in a range of V1 and V2.
