PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image reader capable of generating high-quality image data, even when using a strongly directive light source in read processing. SOLUTION: When the read processing is performed by using an LED light source 14 provided to a carriage 11 of the image reader 100, a top end white reference plate 12 and a rear end white reference plate 13 are provided; and light quantity information is obtained from the top-end white reference plate 12 and the rear-end white reference plate 13. On the basis of the acquired light quantity information, a correction formula for performing shading correction is calculated.
