PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To display an image in which black luminance is suppressed and contrast is improved more, while generating stable write-in discharge without increasing drive voltage largely even on an a large screen panel. SOLUTION: There is provided a drive method of a panel including a plurality of discharge cells each having a scan electrode, a sustaining electrode and a data electrode. In the method, one field is constituted by using a plurality of sub-fields performing initialization operation causing a discharge cell to generate initialization discharge, write-in operation causing the discharge cell to generate write-in discharge, and sustaining operation causing the discharge cell to generate sustaining discharge; in at least one of the sub-fields, initialization operation is performed by applying down slope waveform voltage to at least one of the scan electrodes by being divided to a plurality of times, while the slope of down slope waveform voltage applied after temporally is set more gently than a slope of down slope waveform voltage applied before temporally.
