The invention relates to a thermal insulation system for tankers, transport containers, and large ground tanks in which liquefied natural gas (LNG) is transported or stored. Said thermal insulation system comprises two respective thermal insulation layers composed of panels (4, 5) as well as two vacuum-tight barrier layers (6, 7) which are alternately superimposed on one another. The invention is characterized in that the cover plates (8) and the stiffening plates (9) of the panels (4, 5) are made of a fiber composite that has a linear thermal expansion coefficient of less than 1. 10^-5. K^-1, the stiffening plates (9) of the panels (4, 5) being used as spacers between the cover plates (8). The thermal insulation system can thus be directly fastened in a non-positive manner to the wall of the LNG containers, while the hold volume, particularly of LNG tankers, can be much better utilized. Furthermore, the structure of the panels (4, 5) and the thermally insulating foam (11) used therein result in considerably improved thermal insulation compared to prior art. The production method according to the invention is characterized in that laminated panels (1) are used, by means of which the interior of the container is vacuum-tightly delimited relative to the wall thereof.
