PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To reduce power consumption by specifying a broken resolver out of a plurality of resolvers and stopping supply of excitation signal to the broken resolver out of the plurality of resolvers. SOLUTION: The position detector includes three resolvers 1-3; an excitation signal circuit 5 connected in parallel to the three resolvers 1-3 to supply the excitation signal to the three resolvers 1-3; three switches 11-13 provided each between the excitation signal circuit 5 and the three resolvers 1-3; and a central processing unit (CPU) 10 which performs failure diagnosis of each of the three resolvers 1-3 by switching the three switches 11-13, respectively. The CPU 10 interrupts the connection of the broken resolver 1-3 with the excitation signal circuit 5 by switching the three switches 11-13, respectively, based on the results of the failure diagnosis.
