PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a liquid crystal additive capable of driving a liquid crystal by a sufficiently low threshold voltage, and to provide a method for using the liquid crystal additive and a liquid crystal display device including the liquid crystal additive. SOLUTION: The liquid crystal additive contains a complex which is obtained by coupling host compounds having inclusion capacity of liquid crystal molecules with a metal oxide nanoparticle and is added to a liquid crystal layer of the liquid crystal display device. In the invented method, the complex obtained by coupling the host compounds having inclusion capacity of liquid crystal molecules with the metal oxide nanoparticle is added to the liquid crystal layer of the liquid crystal display device to reduce the driving voltage of the liquid crystal display device.
