<p>A liquid-crystal composition which satisfies at least one of the properties including high nematic-phase upper-limit temperature, low nematic-phase lower-limit temperature, low viscosity, high optical anisotropy, high permittivity anisotropy, high resistivity, high stability to ultraviolet, and high stability to heat or has an adequate balance between at least two of the properties. Provided is an AM element having short response time, high voltage retention, high contrast ratio, long life, etc. The liquid-crystal composition has a nematic phase and contains a specific optically active compound as a first component. The composition may contain a specific compound having a high upper-limit temperature or a low viscosity as a second component and a specific compound having a large positive value of permittivity anisotropy as a third component. Provided is a liquid-crystal display element comprising the composition.</p> |
