A mobile communication system is provided with a wireless communication device which is installed in a mobile communication network and which communicates wirelessly with mobile terminals; a gateway which relays mobile terminal communication from the wireless communication device to the internet; and a node which performs authentication in response to connection requests from mobile terminals. The gateway is installed in the wireless communication device or a carrier network. The node establishes a direct tunnel between the wireless communication device and the gateway, and connects the mobile terminals to the internet via said direct tunnel and through the mobile communication network. As a result, traffic which only passes through the carrier network is reduced.
