<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To properly recognize a vehicle interior state including a seat equipped with a height-adjustable headrest. Ž<P>SOLUTION: A vehicle interior state recognition device includes an illuminating means 15 for illuminating infrared rays into a vehicle compartment including seats 2-6 equipped with height-adjustable headrests 51-56, an imaging means 16 for imaging an image inside the vehicle compartment into which the infrared rays are illuminated by the illuminating means 15, and a recognizing means 18 for recognizing specific information based on the image imaged by the imaging means 16. Objects of the image imaged by the imaging means 16 include upper portions of the seats 2-6 including the headrests 51-56 and passengers (A-D) seated in the seats 2-6, and the recognizing means 18 determines the heights of the headrests 51-56 relative to the passengers seated on the seats based on the images of the headrests 51-56 imaged by the imaging means 16.
