Class 65(2) [Also in Group XXXII] A motor vehicle independent suspension system (see Group XXXII) comprises a ball-joint consisting of a socket 33 having a generally semi-spherical portion projecting through an opening 27 in an arm 23 of the suspension and an integral mounting flange 34 positioned adjacent a supporting portion 29, and a ball-joint stud 39 mounted on a spindle 15 of the suspended road wheel (not shown). The spindle 15 comprises upper and lower ball-joints 13, 18 connected respectively to upper and lower suspension arms 11, 16. The stud 39 of the upper ball-joint carries a semi-spherical bearing member 42. The head of the stud 39 is semi-spherical and is in frictional engagement with a similarly shaped washer 50 which is spring-loaded at 51. The latter is flanged and secured by peripherallyshaped lugs (Fig. 5, not shown) to the mounting flange 34.' These crimped over portions are accommodated by pressed-in recesses in the supporting portion 29. The cover 46 and socket 33 are secured to the portion 29 by rivets 53. The joint is sealed against dust by means of a cover 43, a shield 44 and a sealing ring 45. In the lower joint 18 a self-contained ball-bearing assembly 78 is disposed between the head of the stud 71 and the semi-spherical bearing member 82. The cover 86 of the socket 33 is adapted to be snapped into position and is formed with lubricant grooves 89 for the passage of lubricant, fed from a grease fitting 88. A rib 64 forming part of the sheet metal pressing on the arm 56, has a vertical wall 65 which serves on one side to rotate the socket 67.
