PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for manufacturing a ferritic stainless steel material excellent in toughness after hot working. SOLUTION: The method for manufacturing the ferritic stainless steel material comprises subjecting a material having a chemical composition comprising, by mass, 0.03-0.08% C,≤1.0% Si,≤1.0% Mn, 11.5-14.5% Cr, 0.14-0.49% Ni, >0.10% but≤0.30% Al,≤0.030% N and the balance being Fe and unavoidable impurities to heating, hot working and cooling under following conditions (1)-(3): (1) heating is carried out at temperature of 850-1,150°C; (2) hot working is carried out at working ratio (cross section before working/cross section after working) of≥8; and (3) after hot working, cooling is carried out at cooling rate of 150-600°C/min in a range from cooling starting temperature to 800°C.
