<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for assembling a retainer and a cotter on a cylinder head as a cam cap remains mounted. Ž<P>SOLUTION: When the retainer 131 and the cotter 132 are placed on a valve spring 140, an axial center M of the retainer 131 is offset from an axial center N of a valve stem 111 to avoid the interference with the cam cap 160. With a tapered outer peripheral face 131b of the retainer 131 abutting on the inner periphery of an opening porion of the valve spring 140, the retainer 131 offset and placed is guided toward the axial center of the valve spring 140.
