A fan assembly 10, for creating an air current, comprises a nozzle 14 mounted on a base 12. The base 12 comprises an outer casing having at least one air inlet, and an impeller housing 64 located within the outer casing. The impeller housing 64 has an air inlet 70, an air outlet, and an impeller 52 located within the impeller housing 64, a motor 56 being provided for driving the impeller 52 about an axis to create an air flow through the impeller housing 64. The nozzle 14 comprises an interior passage 86 for receiving the air flow from the air outlet of the impeller housing 64 and a mouth 26 through which the air flow is emitted from the fan assembly 10, wherein the said at least one air inlet to the outer casing is spaced no more than 50 mm along said axis from the air inlet 70 to the impeller housing 64.
