PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an internal combustion engine with an intensified air flow in a combustion chamber. SOLUTION: The internal combustion engine has a cylinder 10, a piston 20, a head 30, a combustion chamber 100 provided between the piston 20 and the head 30, an air-intake port 40 which is disposed inclined relative to a cylinder and through which air for combustion is introduced to the combustion chamber, and an air-intake valve 50 which is driven by a valve drive mechanism to open/close the end on a combustion chamber side of the air-intake port, wherein the air-intake port includes a partition wall 41 which divides the cross-section of the flow path into a cylinder side and a valve drive mechanism side, and a flow path control valve 42 which closes the flow path on the valve drive mechanism side rather than the partition wall according to operational conditions, and the combustion chamber is configured to include, in the outer circumferential edge portion near the symmetrical surfaces of the combustion chamber, squish portions 24, 25, 31 and 32 which are tilted so that the inner diameter side of the cylinder rather than the outer diameter side is on the crankshaft side in the cylinder axis direction.
