The method involves providing a target position of a medical device (12,13,14,15,16,17,18,19,20). The relative position of the medical device, is determined for the target position. A positioning support signal is provided as a measure of the relative position of the medical device for the target position. The positioning support signal is an optical signal or an acoustic signal which is emitted by the medical device or by a device which is attached to the medical device. Independent claims are also included for: (1) a carrier device with a position sensor and a connection; and (2) a system for positioning of a medical device in an operating room.
