A gypsum formulation, typically for producing a gypsum building board, is produced by adding to an aqueous gypsum slurry containing a water swellable clay (such as bentonite), a comb-based copolymer fluidiser and a basic water-soluble polymer having affinity for clay, and allowing a layer of the aqueous gypsum slurry to set. The water-soluble polymer may be polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP), a silanised polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) or a starch derivative. The comb copolymer may be a polyalkoxylated acrylic or methacrylic acid. |
