A detachable footrest steering assembly 19 is able to engage a steerable swivel wheel 5 of a wheelchair [see Figure 1] such that a user can control steering of the wheel 6 by foot movement. The foot controlled steering assembly 19 comprises a swivelling foot rest 3 carried by a support arm, and a rotatable connector 22 mounted to the support arm and arranged to engage with a pin 16 formed on the steering axle 18 of the swivel wheel 6. The rotatable connector 22 is of a cylindrical nature and is operatively coupled to the swivelling footrest 3 by at least one cable 4,20 such that rotation of the footrest 3 causes rotation of the connector 22 which in turn causes rotation of the wheel 6. In a described embodiment the steering assembly can be arranged to be controlled by a different movement other than rotation of the user's foot, for example movement of the knee or shoulder. The invention can be used by people with hemiplegia. |
