PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a failure detection device capable of surely detecting failures of a sensor and a failure detection method. SOLUTION: An ECU for detecting the presence of a failure of an acceleration sensor estimates a voltage value Vout of an output voltage output from the acceleration sensor when an input voltage, which is input from a sensor power supply to the acceleration sensor to detect the presence of a failure, is input to the acceleration sensor, considering an upper limit value V1 and a lower limit value V2 of a variation of a voltage value Vin of the input voltage. The ECU sets a determination condition used as a determination reference for determining whether the acceleration sensor has a failure, using as a threshold value the voltage value Vout of the output voltage corresponding to the upper limit V1 and the lower limit V2 of the variation of the voltage value Vin of the input voltage. Subsequently, the ECU determines whether the acceleration sensor has a failure by measuring the voltage value Vout of the output voltage output from the acceleration sensor, and comparing the measured voltage value Vout of the output voltage with the determination condition set in advance.
