The spring (1) has a cylindrical winding body that is formed by winding of wire material (2). The wire material is reworked in a working step so that the wire material forms a cross section having a flattening part (3) in an axial plane that comprises a spring center axis (X). The reworking of material is performed by material removal. A spring winding is ground over in an external area or in an internal area. The erosion depth is upto one-third of the size of a spring wire. An independent claim is also included for a method for producing a coil spring.
